Artest would like to stay in Houston instead of leaving through free agency

By Anthony Caruso III

Ron Artest is a free agent this summer. But if Artest had his way, he wouldn’t leave the Rockets organization. He would probably take less money to stay with Houston.

After the horrific brawl in November 2004, Rick Adelman, the Rockets head coach, gave Artest a second chance to forget those dreadful actions. Artest played a year under Adelman in Sacramento. This was the second year that Artest played under Adelman and his first year in Houston.

Artest and the rest of the Rockets were able to beat the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of the playoffs. They beat the Blazers 4 games to 2. And it was the first time that Houston won a playoff series since 1997.

After Yao Ming was injured in the Conference semi-finals, Artest and the rest of the Rockets were counted on more. Artest averaged 17.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 35.5 minutes during the regular season. He averaged 15.6 points and 4.3 rebounds in 37.5 minutes in both playoff series.

Artest will look for a contract extension in the neighborhood of $10 million per season. He made $8.45 million this past season in the final year of a contract.
