The Knicks want to secure even more cap space by trading Curry and Jeffries

By Anthony Caruso III

Everybody knows the New York Knicks have a plan for 2010. Head Coach Mike D'Antoni and GM Donnie Walsh have mentioned this play ever since their 2008 press conferences when they've both come from Phoenix and Indiana, respectively. The Knicks are attempting to acquire even more cap space to spend next summer.

The Knicks would love to trade both Eddy Curry and Jared Jeffries. Both of these players have contracts past the 2010 summer – both player options for the 2010-11 seasons. They've tried to trade Curry many times over the past several years since Isiah Thomas acquired him from the Chicago Bulls.

They were rumored back at the trade deadline to send both Curry and Jeffries to the Charlotte Bobcats. In the reported deal, the Knicks would have received Boris Diaw and Raja Bell, both players played under D'Antoni in Phoenix, in the deal. However, the deal did not happen.

Curry had a lot to deal with over the past year. He had to deal with the murder death of his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his son, which happened in January 2009 in Chicago. He also missed the majority of the season for numerous reasons, which is why he only appeared in 3 games last season. Jeffries played in 56 games last season.

Curry is due to make $10.5 million for the 2009-10 season. He has a player option for $11.2 million the following season, which he is expected to pick up. Jeffries is due to make $6.4 million for the 2009-10 season. He has a player option for $6.8 million the following season.

The Knicks hope to get expiring contacts in return for both players, if they can't acquire Diaw and Bell in the before-mentioned move. The Knicks want to have enough cap space to sign potentially two superstar free agents next summer. LeBron James is their main target, while Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amar'e Stoudemire, Steve Nash, among others, have been mentioned.
