Spurs will have to decide the future of Michael Finley

By Anthony Caruso III

With the San Antonio Spurs recently acquiring Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks, the Spurs have to decide if Michael Finley will return, even though he will not be a free agent until 2010. Finley now will be a back-up if he does return to the Alamo.

If he does return, it will likely be off the bench. Finley hasn't come off the bench since the 06-07 season. He came off the bench for 66 games that season.

The Spurs basically stole Jefferson away from the Bucks after they decided to cut salary. Jefferson was acquired for Fabricio Oberto, Kurt Thomas, and Bruce Bowen. Thomas has a chance to stick around with the Bucks, while Oberto is gone and Bowen will be soon.

Jefferson started all 82 games in 08-09. He averaged 19.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks. Finley averaged 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.2 blocks in 08-09. Finley appeared in 81 games, with 77 starts.

The 36-year-old forward came to the Spurs in 2005 after being released by the Dallas Mavericks. He opted to sign with the Spurs over the Miami HEAT that summer. He averaged 10.1 points in 05-06, 9.0 points in 06-07, 10.1 points in 07-08, and 9.7 points last season.
